Even though we have had a slightly prolonged warmer period in September, there is no doubt that the colder and wetter weather is very much on its way. With this change in weather and season, your lawn is going to be subjected to differing conditions, meaning things such as moss may begin to appear.
In preparation for this, the UKLCA has put together a mini-guide on how to control lawn moss during the colder months of the year.
Why Does Moss Occur?
The first place for us to begin is to take a look into why moss can occur on your lawn. There are many different reasons this can happen which include:
- Poor Drainage
- Shaded Garden
- Lack of Fertiliser
- Grass Cut Too Short
- Heavy Foot Traffic
Understanding why your lawn may develop moss is key to also being able to understand what preventative measures you will need to take. In order to ensure maximum effectiveness of any treatments, it is always beneficial to chat with a lawn care expert who will be able to guide you with their knowledge.
What Are The Best Treatment Methods To Use?
Ridding the moss on a lawn is also high on the priority list for many, so therefore it is key to also explore the main ways in which you can get your lawn back to its healthy self.
The actual removal of moss is usually approached with a two-pronged attack. The first being to remove the moss that is present on your lawn, and then to explore ways in which to stop it from coming back.
To begin with, removing the moss on your lawn is best approached with the use of scarification. Scarification is the process of raking over the lawn to remove moss and other excess substances. For those that have a larger lawn investing time with a lawn care specialist is very much needed.
Now onto the removal phase. This does take a lot more consideration and time, with more of a focus put on overall lawn care and maintenance. Alongside this, moss killer is also used to help deter any further return across your lawn.
Why Does Regular Lawn Care Help?
Moss in your lawn can be an indicator that there may be further underlying issues. This is where lawn care comes in. With a regular and tailored plan, the experts within UKLCA are able to really support clients in order to ensure their lawns return and maintain their healthy and great look.
Some of the tips recommended by the experts include:
- Aerate your lawn during the autumn by spiking holes in the soil at regular intervals.
- Re-seed sparse or bare patches of your lawn to limit moss exposure.
- When mowing your lawn, do not cut the grass too short as this can cause stress which can promote further moss development.
